Position Summary

The Test & Inspect Technician is responsible for performing scheduled inspections, testing, and maintenance on a variety of fire and life safety systems, including fire alarms, sprinkler systems, suppression systems, emergency lighting, and other life safety equipment. This role ensures that all systems comply with NFPA codes, manufacturer specifications, and local authority requirements, while delivering outstanding customer service and maintaining the highest safety standards.
 

Key Responsibilities

Inspection & Testing

  • Perform inspections and functional testing on fire alarm, sprinkler, special hazard, fire extinguishers and other life safety systems in accordance with NFPA standards and local codes.
  • Verify proper operation of all devices, control panels, and suppression/discharge mechanisms.
  • Conduct main drain, flow, trip, and alarm tests as applicable.
  • Identify system deficiencies and provide recommendations for corrective action.
 

Documentation & Reporting

  • Complete detailed inspection and testing reports accurately and on time.
  • Maintain clear records of deficiencies, repairs, and system upgrades.
  • Provide necessary documentation to customers and Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs).
 

Customer Service

  • Communicate clearly with customers regarding inspection results, system status, and required repairs or maintenance.
  • Provide professional recommendations for improvements, code compliance, or system enhancements.
  • Coordinate scheduling of follow-up repairs with service teams.
 

Safety & Compliance

  • Adhere to OSHA and company safety policies at all times.
  • Ensure all inspections are conducted in compliance with NFPA, local building codes, and manufacturer requirements.
  • Keep up to date on code changes, industry best practices, and product updates.
 

Team Collaboration

  • Work with other technicians, project managers, and service teams to ensure seamless completion of customer service needs.
  • Support training and mentoring of junior technicians as needed.
 
 

Qualifications

Education & Experience

  • High school diploma or equivalent; technical training in fire protection systems preferred.
  • 1–3 years of experience in inspection, testing, or service of fire and life safety systems.
 

Certifications

  • NICET Level I or II in Fire Alarm Systems, Water-Based Systems Inspection & Testing, or Special Hazards preferred.
  • Backflow certification
  • State or local licenses as required.
  • OSHA 10 or 30 certification desirable.
 

Skills & Competencies

  • Strong working knowledge of NFPA 25, NFPA 72, NFPA 17, NFPA 17A, NFPA 96, and related standards.
  • Ability to read and interpret blueprints, schematics, and system layouts.
  • Mechanical and electrical troubleshooting skills.
  • Excellent communication, customer service, and organizational abilities.
  • Basic computer skills for inspection reporting and documentation.
 
 

Physical & Work Environment Requirements

  • Ability to lift 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work at heights or in confined spaces.
  • Work in various environments including commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities.
  • Willingness to travel to job sites, work overtime, and participate in on-call rotations.
