The Test & Inspect Field Supervisor oversees the day-to-day activities of field technicians performing inspections, testing, and maintenance of fire and life safety systems, including fire alarm, sprinkler, suppression, special hazard, and related systems. This role ensures that work is performed safely, accurately, on schedule, and in compliance with NFPA standards, local codes, and company policies. The Field Supervisor serves as a technical leader, mentor, and liaison between field staff, customers, and management.Key Responsibilities
Field Operations Leadership
- Supervise and coordinate daily activities of inspection and testing technicians.
- Assign work orders, manage schedules, and ensure timely completion of inspections.
- Perform site visits to monitor quality, safety, and compliance.
- Provide technical support and guidance to field personnel on complex systems or situations.
Quality Assurance & Compliance
- Verify that inspections are completed according to NFPA standards (NFPA 25, NFPA 72, NFPA 17A, NFPA 96, etc.) and local regulations.
- Review inspection reports for accuracy, completeness, and proper documentation of deficiencies.
- Ensure technicians follow company procedures and safety policies.
Customer & AHJ Relations
- Serve as the primary point of contact for customers regarding inspection schedules, results, and follow-up work.
- Coordinate with Authorities Having Jurisdiction (AHJs) for inspections and approvals as needed.
- Resolve customer concerns quickly and professionally.
Training & Mentorship
- Mentor, coach, and train inspection technicians to improve technical skills and efficiency.
- Conduct safety meetings and field training sessions.
- Support career development by encouraging certifications and ongoing education.
Documentation & Reporting
- Maintain accurate records of field activities, technician performance, and project status.
- Assist in preparing deficiency reports, repair proposals, and compliance documentation.
- Monitor completion of follow-up service work for noted deficiencies.
Resource Management
- Ensure tools, test equipment, and company vehicles are properly maintained.
- Track material usage and coordinate supply needs with the office.
Qualifications
Education & Experience
- High school diploma or equivalent; Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree in Fire Protection, Construction Management, or related field preferred.
- Minimum 5 years of fire and life safety inspection/testing experience, with at least 2 years in a supervisory role.
Certifications
- NICET Level II or higher in Fire Alarm Systems, Inspection & Testing of Water-Based Systems, or Special Hazards required/preferred depending on role scope.
- State or local inspection license as required.
- OSHA 30 or equivalent safety certification preferred. ● Backflow Certified
Skills & Competencies
- Strong working knowledge of NFPA codes and standards.
- Ability to read and interpret system drawings, schematics, and technical specifications.
- Excellent leadership, communication, and organizational skills.
- Proficient in inspection reporting software and Microsoft Office applications.
- Problem-solving skills with the ability to make decisions in the field.
Physical & Work Environment Requirements
- Ability to lift 50 lbs, climb ladders, and work at heights or in confined spaces.
- Work in various environments including commercial, industrial, and institutional facilities.
- Willingness to travel to multiple job sites and occasionally work overtime.
